The Central Demands for COP28
SPECIAL ENVOY:
“Good day, fellow esteemed delegates.”
“I am the Special Envoy of the Dugongs, and today, I will deliver the central demands of what this conference must achieve.”
“We Dugongs are – as you can see – voluptuous and beautiful marine mammals. One of our most densely populated habitats is just off the coast of the UAE.”
“But there is an enormous danger to us local Dugongs nearby.”
“Recently, a consortium of oil and gas companies led by you-know-who you-know-who has started to build huge oil and gas infrastructure right in the middle of my home, the Protected Area of Marawah.”
“We Dugongs are already under pressure, with many of our habitats becoming unlivable because of pollution, plastic, and oil and gas drilling.”
“So, threatening our best living areas is wrong and must stop!”
“Besides, this drilling for oil and gas does not make any sense at all since we must end fossil fuel emissions as quickly as possible.”
“COP28’s main task is simple: phase out all fossil fuels rapidly!”
“And as a local Dugong, I may add that this needs to happen in reality, for instance, right here in the Arabian Gulf: Stop drilling in the Marawah protected area!”
“I am here to call on the national oil company and its leader, plus their foreign collaborators, to declare a pause in construction right here during the COP because… I’m worth saving!”
“I’d also like to ask you to sign up and become a FRIEND OF THE DUGONG. Or access the LEAVE IT IN THE GROUND campaign website.”
“Thank you.“
SPEAKER: The Dugong delivers daily commentary on the situation of the Dugongs, and their struggle to keep their habitats intact. Always at 1 PM in the B1 building.
