Friends of the Dugong close ranks against oil and gas
SPECIAL ENVOY:
“Good Day, fellow honourable delegates,
“For the last time I am speaking, before I can finally get back into my cosy warm waters … even if lately they have started to taste a little oily…
“It has been a pleasure meeting you all – but it is less pleasurable to watch the lack of progress in the fight against climate change and for a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels.
“However, I have made many new friends and supporters here at COP 28. A few of them are here today and will say a few words themselves – they all come from those countries – whose large oil and gas companies support the mega gas project that is threatening to destroy my home in the Marawah Protected Area.
“Now, we are not allowed to name those countries or governments, so I will introduce them through a little quiz.
“Three come from countries who are famous for excellent cuisine – and frankly we would prefer if they dealt in olive oil and perfume, rather than fossil oil and gas. They include the country that gave rise to MICHELIN STARS for restaurants – and the company is TOTALLY into oil and gas.
“The second is the country where PIZZA comes from, and its state oil and gas company holds 25% of the shares of this gas field! Would ENIbody believe it?
“The third one is the origin of sushi… and there are quite some companies involved.
“Of course, other countries also have good food, but unfortunately also large tech companies provide oil and gas infrastructure… such as a far east country starting with K. Your guess is as good as mine…
“And in lovely Europe, there is a country that is well known for beer and sausages… it’s quite a big country… hmm?
“Finally, there is a LARGE country that reaches from Europe to the far East of Asia, and the company’s name might describe them as LUKey but I don’t know… they may be quite unlucky with this investment.
“Now let me invite all my Friends who are present to say a few words …
